-- The Zippy, The Flow Feature African Tribal Graphics --
For Immediate Release
Manchester, VT – Fall 2009 – Vew-Do Balance Boards, the original manufacturer of high-performance balance boards, has unveiled their 20th Anniversary “Zippy” and “Flow” models that feature traditional African mask designs, paying tribute to the origin of balance boarding – the tiny jungle villages of East Africa’s Gold Coast, where balance boarding was first discovered by the western world when natives placed crude wooden boards over sawed-off tree rounds.
Patented in the United States in the 1950’s by Stanley Washburn, balance boarding has become an international sport with more than 1 million estimated users worldwide. While piloting airplanes in East Africa in the 1940’s, Washburn spent time visiting and observing the local culture of tiny villages scattered through the Takoradi jungle. According to his memoirs, “Facts, Fables and Frenzy,” the first time he saw a local child using one, Washburn was given a turn, proceeded to fall, and left the local villagers laughing. Washburn recognized how much fun the villagers were having. When his daughter asked for a unique holiday gift, he made one at home in the US. He refined it by adding a grooved roller, a center rail and end-stops, making it safer to use. The following year it was patented, and balance boarding was officially brought to the Western world.
After Washburn retired, he spent much of his time mentoring Vew-Do founder Brew Moscarello, who has not only continued the tradition of designing the best balance boards, but maintains the role of ‘shepherd’ of this still-growing sport. Vew-Do is dedicated to educating the public on the importance of balance training and inner balance awareness.
“The new Zippy and Flow boards perfectly capture the imagery of balance boarding’s roots,” says Brew Moscarello, the founder of Vew-Do, the best-selling balance board manufacturer worldwide since 1990.
“The graphic designs of our new Contact Series Boards are historically accurate, featuring authentic tribal wood grain masks, giving them an aged, weathered appearance. We’ve always been blown away by Stanley Wahsburn’s ability to transform a simple cultural observance into a world wide sport. Like all Vew-Do Balance Boards, the new Zippy and Flow perform incredibly well and no doubt will continue to drive the sport of balance boarding – so whether you’re riding one of our boards for performance balance boarding, athletic training or for fun, Vew-Do has a model designed just for you,” adds Moscarello.
Since the introduction of Vew-Do Balance Boards in 1990, countless numbers of pro athletes have begun implementing Vew-Do Balance Board training into their daily workouts. From professional skaters, snowboarders, pro soccer stars, pro leagues like the NFL and NHL to several U.S. Olympic Training Centers, athletes are using Vew-Do boards for sports-specific balance training.
